Kyoto Machiya

Near the Imperial Palace in the heart of Kyoto, Junko and Chris transformed a dilapidated 107-year-old residence into an inspired space that balances traditional construction with modern and efficient updates. In the 904-square-foot house, the ground floor entrance opens to a workshop in the front with bath, toilet and sleeping quarters towards the back. Stairs leading to the second floor lead to an open plan kitchen and dining area where a gridded divider creates separation for a sitting room that doubles as a play and work space. Bespoke light fixtures and furniture create a harmony with custom built-ins. The western kitchen is the perfect scene for Junko to share her culinary passion and host vegan lifestyle experiences.
